Planchets are fed into a stamping machine, which exerts TONNES OF PRESSURE on the discs as both sides are stamped with the coin design. This is called “striking.” Samples of the struck coins are inspected by microscope.

Any that don’t make the grade head for a meeting with the dreaded waffler where they are crushed between two high-pressure rollers that create a ridged pattern. This makes them useless, so they’re not stolen before recycling.

If all these stages (and more) run smoothly, a mint can churn out coins. The US Mint in Philadelphia produces over 35 MILLION COINS A DAY—that’s mucho money!
